The Architecture and Engineering team, where this role is based, manages essential security infrastructure, including robust data centers, network systems, DNS and time services, and cloud solutions.
Role Overview – Cyber Security Engineer
As a Cyber Security Engineer at Jisc, you will be instrumental in maintaining and evolving our critical infrastructure supporting DNS and Network Time services. You’ll directly influence the strategic direction of Jisc’s Cybersecurity division while ensuring high availability, resilience, and security across key services.
You will work within a hybrid model, supporting offices in London, Bristol, Manchester, and Oxford. This position offers a unique opportunity to contribute to national digital security efforts in the education sector.
Key Responsibilities of the Cyber Security Engineer

Infrastructure Maintenance: Manage and enhance cybersecurity platforms and applications through patching, monitoring, and continuous improvement.

Service Level Compliance: Ensure all services meet business and customer needs, adhering to established SLAs.

System Monitoring & Auditing: Conduct comprehensive monitoring and auditing of systems to optimize performance and security.

Second Line Support: Provide advanced troubleshooting and technical support to users of hosted services.

Threat Detection & Reporting: Monitor infrastructure for cyber threats, conduct vulnerability assessments, and report findings to relevant stakeholders.

Collaboration: Work closely with cross-functional teams to maintain and improve security posture across the organisation.
Essential Skills & Experience

Networking Knowledge: Experience with networking protocols and infrastructure is highly desirable.

Server Administration: Proficient in managing Linux and/or Windows servers.

System Integration: Skilled in deploying, integrating, and administering proprietary and open-source security systems.

DNS Expertise: Hands-on experience with DNS server technologies such as Bind, Unbound, PowerDNS, or Infoblox.

Programming & Scripting: Familiarity with scripting and programming languages including PHP, Ruby, Java, Python, Bash, Golang, C, and Perl.

Database Management: Ability to manage backend databases like PostgreSQL and MySQL.

Security Awareness: Understanding of cybersecurity principles and threat landscape relevant to critical infrastructure.
